PUNE: More than 2 lakh consumers in all the Peth areas and localities in Lullanagar, Kondhwa and Sinhagad Road were hit by power failures on Saturday morning when a 132KV underground power supply cable of the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Ltd was cut during road-digging activities done by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
The repair works on the supply line are expected to take eight days and load-shedding lasting two-three hours may be effected, on a rotation basis, in the city so that the areas affected by the power failure can be backfed. The 132KV supply line is the main source of supply to the 132KV Rasta Peth gas-based sub-station of the transmission company. It supplies power to all the Peths and some areas on the outskirts of the city.
A statement issued by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) said the power failure hit Rasta Peth, Kasba Peth and other Peth areas along with Lullanagar, Kondhwa, Gultekdi, Camp, Swargate, Phule Mandai, Laxmi Road and Sinhagad Road areas.
Damaged cable spurs power failure in many areas
The distribution company started backfeeding the affected areas through an alternative supply network and by 2.30pm, power supply to almost 70% of the affected placed was restored.
On Saturday, at 11.33am the underground cable was cut by the excavator. “The transmission company is procuring the joint required for the repairs from Chennai, which is being flown into Pune. However, the repairs will require at least eight days. The distribution company is aware that the secondary school certificate and higher secondary certificate board exams are currently on and efforts are being made to avoid load-shedding as much as possible,” the statement added.
The Rasta Peth gas-based sub-station will remain shut during the repairs. The distribution company will have to manage about 75-80MW load to backfeed the affected areas. “However, due to the rising summer temperature, the demand for power is expected to increase and load management may become difficult. If that happens, the distribution company may have to effect load-shedding for two-three hours by rotation,” the statement added.
The distribution company further stated that road digging with the help of excavators had been on since the past 10 days in the Parvati water works area to lay a PMC water pipeline. The 132KV underground supply line, originating from the 220V Parvati sub-station of the transmission company, supplies power to the Rasta Peth sub-station. The municipal corporation was cautioned about the presence of the main supply line and was advised to avoid digging in the area. The civic body was also shown the location of the underground cable, the statement said adding that despite the warning, the digging continued.
