Peugeot’s first-generation 2008 came out during a time when crossovers and SUVs hadn’t gained the massive popularity they enjoy in recent years and family cars, like saloons, wagons or even MPV hadn’t been swept by this tide.

This is probably why the 2008 originally looked more like a small MPV than a traditional subcompact crossover, which was its official designation. It was actually a similar recipe as the one used for the first-ever 3008.

Today, however, everyone is looking to build trendy and dynamic-looking crossovers of several shapes and sizes. Peugeot, of course, are no different, and their SUV offensive got off to a really good start thanks to the critically acclaimed second-generation 3008, which also won the European Car of the Year award back in 2007.

Now that the all-new 208 supermini has been unveiled, we have a pretty much good picture of where Peugeot stands as far as its new design language is concerned, which means that this rendering by Kleber Silva of a next-gen 2008 is by no means outlandish. It features a nearly identical light signature to the smaller 208, albeit with shorter “fangs” that don’t extend all the way down to the bottom of the bumper. There’s also a two-tone aesthetic and a strong, muscular hood design.

We don’t know whether the next 2008 will look like this; what we do know is that it will be built on PSA’s Compact Modular Platform (CMP), will be a touch longer and roughly 40 kg (88 lbs) lighter than the outgoing model and shall be launched this fall.

Peugeot’s latest i-Cockpit design will be adopted for the interior, and the engine lineup will include a number 48V mild-hybrid powertrains, possibly joined at a later date by an all-electric version with a range of up to 280 miles (450 km), according to Auto Express.
