Nagpur: After a delay of four years, the first-phase construction of Indian Institute of Management-Nagpur’s (IIM-N) permanent campus will start from March 6. The ground-breaking ceremony, which was cancelled in December last year, would be done by Union minister Nitin Gadkari and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis at the site. The model code is likely to kick in this month and hence the process was expedited to enable the BJP heavyweights be part of the crucial event.
Taking no chances, the institute has invited a host of elected representatives and officers of MADC as well. The inaugural ceremony had courted controversy when the invitation cards missed Gadkari’s name though he was instrumental in bringing the top B-school to city in 2015.

The Central government had sanctioned Rs379.68 crore last year for the first phase. The prestigious academy, running from a temporary campus at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), has drawn up a Rs650crore plan for constructing its much-delayed permanent facility in three-phases on the 132-acre sprawling land at Dahegaon Mouza.

In the first phase, approximately 14.8 acre (60,000 sq m) would be developed by a Delhi-based private firm. Phase-I includes state-of-the-art academic complex, administrative block, students hostel, sports complex and faculty housing at the cost of Rs379 crore. The first phase is designed to accommodate 600 students, which means, the intake would be hiked from 120 now when the campus shifts. The institute has set 2020 as its deadline to move out from VNIT.

The sprawling campus will also house discussion spaces, recreation spaces consisting of the gym, open spaces, in later phases.

The campus will also house a management development centre for the institute’s executive education programme (EEP) and its entrepreneurship incubation centre, InFED, in environmental sustainability. It is expected that the construction for Phase-I will be completed in 18 months.

Established in 2015, two batches of its flagship programme post graduate programme in Management (PGP in MBA) have passed out and the shift from VNIT to Mihan may not be before another two batches. Earlier, it was expected to move out by 2019.

The placement process for the third batch, set to graduate in 2019, is underway. The convocation is likely to be held in mid-April.
