Every person has a story to share. This column puts the spotlight on the people of Chennai, faces we see but rarely interact with — giving a glimpse into their struggle.

Suresh N
Chennai:
From the time I was in Class 4, I used to accompany my father’s uncle and my uncle, who had taken to tailoring like my father, to the shop. I thus picked up the craft without too much effort, what with me having been exposed to it all the while. Now, at 40 years, I run my own tailoring unit in Ramapuram. I often wonder if any VIP can enjoy the freedom or peace I have. Can Rajinikanth or Kamal Haasan walk down the streets when they feel like it, or walk into a theatre and watch a film in peace? Even doctors and professionals come to me to get their clothes stitched.
I am in the profession of making people appear dignified, and I am very proud of that. I got married only four years ago, to Vennila. Now, I have my one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Vinmani. I don’t want her to be stressed too much over academics. I want her to engage in sports and work on being physically strong. The only dream I have right now is to make my daughter a police officer. The world is not safe for women, and there are so many cases where they get troubled. So when such a situation happens, we go to the police station seeking justice. If my daughter herself is a police officer, no one will dare to trouble her! I hope this dream of mine is fulfilled when she grows up.
