CHANDIGARH: Two more market associations of Chandigarh have come forward to manage the parking lots on no-profit-no-loss basis. Four more have been deliberating with Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, an umbrella body of the traders, to start management of parking lots on their own.
Significantly, the move came after 16 market welfare associations of the city submitted to the MC in writing asking to be allowed to run the parking lots either free of cost or on no-profit-no-loss basis a few days ago.
The two market associations which have now come forward are Traders' Welfare Associations of Sector 22-A and Market Welfare Committee of Sector 30-C. Both market areas are situated in the core commercial hubs of the city, where thousands of people visit on a daily basis.
"We have received the official letter of the two market association and deliberations are going on with four more. Soon, we will deposit the list of all such interested associations with the municipal corporation. Such moves by these associations will benefit customers visiting these markets on a daily basis," said Charanjeev Singh, nominated municipal councillor and chairman of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal.
Sources in the MC revealed that the engineering department and parking branch of the municipal corporation has started the work to prepare the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will be brought to the general house meeting of the MC in the upcoming month for detailed discussion. Fulfilment of market associations' demand will depend on the decision taken in the house meeting.
A few days back, the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal had given a list of 16 market welfare associations of the city which had come forward to run parking lots on their own. Out of these 16 associations, eight had decided to run the parking free of cost, while the rest had decided to run the lots on no-profit-no-loss basis by charging only Rs 2 and 5 for two and four-wheelers, respectively. The charges will only compensate for the manpower hired by the market associations and will not amount to any extra profit.
