NEW DELHI: A mechanic was crushed to death and three others were injured in south Delhi early on Sunday after a speeding car lost control and hit them, the police said.
The woman driving the vehicle, Ananya Khurana (21) a makeup artist by profession, has been arrested. The victim, a motor mechanic, has been identified as Mohammad Shakir (24).
The police said the accident happened near the Moolchand underpass on Ring Road around 1.30am when the mechanic was called to fix the tyre of a punctured car of Rudra Ashish Pandey.
Pandey was returning home in Okhla along with his friends, Nitish and Gaurav, after attending a marriage ceremony in Moti Bagh.
"As Shakir was replacing the tyre, a speeding car coming from the AIIMS side hit him, killing him on the spot. Nitish, Gaurav and Pandey who were standing next to him were hurt," said deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Chinmoy Biswal.
"Ananya fled the spot and was arrested later from her residence in Lajpat Nagar area," Biswal said.
"During interrogation, Ananya said she was coming from the IGI Airport after picking up her friends. Her parents were in another car with some other guests. Her father runs a garment business in the Lajpat Nagar market," the DCP said.
"A diploma holder in makeup art, Ananya studied in California and had returned to India in December 2018. She was looking to launch her own startup," Biswal said.
