KOLKATA: More than 200 students staying in the Presidency University hostel for girls may meet sometime next week to decide the next course of action after the university authorities wrote to their parents seeking their opinion on the demand of the girls to do away with the "9.30 pm curfew".
An official in the university who is in touch with the students residing in the hostel said: "The girls are not happy with the university's decision to write to the parents. They feel they are adults and can take their decisions. They may have a meeting next week to decide what they will do next. The date has not been decided yet," said the official.
A few days ago, almost 97 percent of the students in the hostel wrote to the university requesting to do away with the 9. 30 pm curfew for the girls to return to the hostel. Dean of Students, Presidency University Arun Maity has sent letters to the guardians and parents of all the 205 boarders who have signed on the letter demanding omission of the curfew which has been imposed on them by the university authorities to return to the hostel within 9:30pm. "The decision to send letters and seek opinion from the parents was taken by the Student Welfare Board Committee. The letters have been dispatched last week. We have sought their opinion within mid-March. There are 211 boarders in the Presidency University Girls' Hostel in Salt Lake.
Sources said that five years back, the curfew time was relaxed from 7:30pm and pushed to 9:30pm. "Now, the students do not want to adhere by the timing. Their security is a concern for which the cut-off time has been kept. We are waiting for the opinion from parents," the source said.
