Custodial death: SHO among 3 cops suspended
tnn | Mar 4, 2019, 04:23 ISTKanpur: Three policemen, including SHO Churkhi, were suspended after a 35-year-old man allegedly died in police custody in Jalaun on Sunday, four days after he was arrested in a theft case.
The move came after the police lodged an FIR of abetment to suicide against the SHO and two other policemen. Alleging that deceased, Muneshwar, was tortured to death, his family on Sunday gheraoed the police station and demanded action against the cops on duty.
According to Muneshwar’s family, he was detained on Wednesday. “Churkhi police came to the house and took him away,” said victim’s father Vakil Singh. “They didn’t tell us about the reason of his arrest. The policemen tortured him in the lockup that resulted in his death,” alleged Singh.
Sources said Muneshwar was detained on Wednesday and kept inside the lockup beyond 24 hours from the time of his arrest. “SHO Churkhi claimed that Muneshwar had attempted suicide in bathroom during wee hours of Sunday following which he was taken to the district hospital where he died,” said SP Swami Prasad.
Later, Prasad met Muneshwar’s family assured them of a fair probe. Muneshwar’s body has been sent for postmortem. On the basis of the complaint filed by the family, police have lodged an FIR of abetment to suicide besides other relevant sections of IPC against SHO Churkhi Anand Kumar and two other constables, and suspended them, the SP said. The case will be investigated by an ASP rank officer.
