‘I will meet the affected persons in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada’

Jaimala, Women and Child Development Minister, said on Saturday that a separate unit will be established to provide skill training to the persons affected by endosulfan.

She was chairing a meeting of the district endosulfan committee at the Zilla Panchayat Hall, here.

Ms. Jaimala said that she would hold a joint meeting to decide on providing the training to those affected by endosulfan in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts. She would personally visit and meet those affected by endosulfan in these districts. She said four decades ago endosulfan was sprayed in plantation areas. Experts would be told to examine the matter scientifically. They would be told to study the impact of endosulfan on soil and water, she said.

Ms. Jaimala also said that it was tragic that none had been punished for spraying endosulfan and the suffering caused by it. Ms. Jaimala said there were complaints that those affected by endosulfan had not been identified properly. Hence a survey of those affected by endosulfan should be undertaken in those villages, close to places where endosulfan was sprayed, by junior health assistants and anganwadi workers. This would help in providing government facilities to the affected, she said.

The meeting was informed that five acres of land had been reserved at Nada village for constructing a permanent rehabilitation centre for those affected by endosulfan. Ms. Jaimala said that 10 acres of land should be reserved for the centre. This centre should provide treatment and facilities for the affected on par with best institutions abroad.
