Lok Sabha polls: KPCC to rush candidates’ list to AICC
Rajiv G | tnn | Mar 4, 2019, 04:00 ISTThiruvananthapuram: The election committee meeting of the Congress party, which will be held at the KPCC headquarters on Monday, will finalize the list of candidates to be fielded from the state for Lok Sabha polls. However, lack of consensus among UDF constituents on seat sharing is delaying the process of finalizing the party candidates.
The party high command had asked the KPCC to submit the list of candidates by the first week of March, following which the KPCC had decided to submit the list before March 5. Since they cannot delay the submission of the list further, they have made it clear to all the constituents that there will be no additional seats for them this time. The Congress will be contesting in 16 seats, IUML in two, KC(M) and RSP in one seat each.
“We cannot delay further. The deadline given by the high command is already over and now they have extended it on our request. We cannot even wait for a week. We have to submit it in a day or two. Hence, we will be trying to give a final shape to the list on Monday itself,” said KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran.
Even though there is a decision to field the current MPs again from their respective seats, Pathanamthitta has become a new headache for the party. The district Congress committee (DCC) has informed the KPCC that it won’t support Anto Antony, the current MP. It is learned that the DCC will not be recommending his name to the KPCC. The Congress leaders in the district are against fielding Antony again from the seat and they have registered their protest with the KPCC leadership.
The KPCC has asked the DCCs to submit a panel of three candidates. The election committee will be scrutinizing the lists on Monday. The list will be submitted to the AICC after the committee’s clearance.
Though it has been decided to field all the current MPs, the AICC will have a final say on this. Hence, there is intense lobbying to change a few of them.
Another worrying factor for the KPCC is finding candidates in seats like Wayanad, Thrissur and Chalakkudy. A bevy of leaders are lobbying for these seats.
