PANCHKULA: Haryana chief minister M L Khattar will next week lay foundation stone of construction of municipal corporation building, which is a decade-old project.

The first green building of the city will be constructed in Sector 3. A town hall for holding corporation’s events is also in the pipeline. This town hall will have a capacity to accommodate 700 people. Recently, the Panchkula municipal corporation bagged approval for its building plans, which will be constructed at a cost of Rs 45.3 crore.

Panchkula MC commissioner Rajesh Jogpal said that the construction work will be outsourced as the corporation does not have technical expertise.

Records of the MC revealed that the MC office was earlier operating from a community centre in Sector 4. Later, residents raised an objection and moved court after which the corporation was asked to vacate the spot. The MC office was then shifted to Sector 14. In 2013, it was decided that a new building will be constructive in Sector 3, Panchkula.

It was proposed that the Panchkula municipal corporation will have its own three-storey building to accommodate all departments.

In 2013 budget, the corporation had allocated funds of Rs 5 crore for the construction of the office building. But as the project has been delayed, the cost of construction has now been to Rs 45.3 crore.
