President arrives; Coimbatore all set for colourful Mahashivratri celebrations

COIMBATORE: President Ram Nath Kovind arrived in the city on Sunday evening to participate in the Mahashivratri celebrations at Isha Yoga Centre and present President’s Colours at an event at Sulur Air Force station on Monday.
The President was greeted by governor Banwarilal Purohit and state local administration minister amidst tight security. He then proceeded to the circuit house at Race Course, where he would stay for the day. On Monday, the President would visit 5 Base Repair Depot of Air Force in Sulur to give away the President’s Colours . Later in the day, he would take a chopper to the Isha Yoga Centre at the foothills of Velliangiri and spend the evening there, participating in the Mahashivratri celebrations.

The nightlong festival at the centre is a mix of an array of events ranging from meditation sessions to enlightening satsang and entertaining cultural programmes. This year, music sensation Amit Trivedi, fusion maestro Hariharan and pop icon Karthik would enthral the devotees with their performances. Besides, students of Isha Samskriti and members of Sounds of Isha troupe would perform cultural programmes to keep the devotees engrossed throughout the night. At the stroke of midnight, Isha Yoga Centre founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev would take the huge gathering into meditation, the most anticipated event of the night.

A statement from Isha said people from more than 42 countries have signed up for participating in the celebrations this year. All those attending the festival would also be given rudraskash beads as well as the Sarpa Sutra, a ring made of copper. During the nightlong celebrations of Mahashivratri, Maha Annadanam is also offered to the hundreds of thousands of devotees who attend the event at the Isha Yoga Centre.


Prior to the celebrations in front of Adiyogi, a Panchabootha Aradhana would be held at Dhyanalinga temple and special poojas would be done at Linga Bairavi temple and Suryakundam in the centre.


A cattle fair, displaying native breeds of cattle would also be held in the venue. A special folk arts and craft bazaar has been set up, besides stalls on turban tying, multiple regional cuisines to sample and 108 ways to drape saree.


Seating arrangements have been made for thousands of devotees who would congregate in front of 112ft Adiyogi bust, the venue of the celebrations.
