The State government has allotted ₹188.68 crore for the implementation of a comprehensive drinking water project to distribute potable water to the residents in the Chengannur Assembly constituency.

Saji Cherian, MLA, said on Saturday that the project was funded under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

The project will bring an end to the drinking water woes of the people in different parts of the region. It is going to be one of the biggest drinking water projects in the State, Mr. Cherian said.

Overall, the project is expected to cost ₹200 crore. It will cover areas including Ala, Puliyoor, Budhanoor, Pandanad, Mulakuzha, Venmony and Cheriyanad panchayats.

A meeting chaired by Water Resources Minister K. Krishnankutty last month had directed the officials concerned to prepare a detailed project report for the implementation of the project.

The water for the scheme will be collected from a well in the Pampa river at Kolamukku.

“The water will then be brought to a tank with 15-lakh-litre capacity at Angadikkal. We will construct a treatment plant with a capacity to treat 35 lakh litres of water on a daily basis at Nikarumpuram, near Mulakuzha. Two tanks with 14 lakh litres and 6.5 lakh litres of capacity respectively will be set up at Mulakuzha for the distribution of water. Water from these tanks will be taken to tanks at the Ala primary health centre (PHC) and Parachantha. This will help to distribute drinking water to higher reaches of Venmony panchayat,” Mr. Cherian said.

Tanks to be built

He said tanks would also be constructed near the Pennukkara PHC, Mithramadam Junction, Puliyoor PHC and Thuruthimel for distribution of water in Ala, Pandanad, Puliyoor, Budhanoor and Cheriyanad and panchayats. The total capacity of the tanks will be 88.15 lakh litres.

A 910-km pipeline will be laid as part of the project.
