Varanasi: Continuous inflow of pilgrims returning from Kumbh in Prayagraj led to heavy crowd of devotees in the city on the eve of the festival of Mahashivaratri on Sunday.
The district administration has reserved the timing between 7am and 11am for shahi darshan of akharas of Naga sadhus at Kashi Vishwanath temple.

The pilgrims started reaching the city from Saturday and by Sunday evening the areas adjacent to ghats along the Ganga and localities in the vicinity of KVT were flooded with the devotees.

As the Kumbh fair is concluding on Monday, the day devoted to Lord Shiva, more devotees are expected to reach the city by Monday afternoon.

In view of huge inflow of pilgrims, district magistrate Surendra Singh and SSP Anand Kulkarni held a series of meetings with officials of all departments concerned and also held a briefing session for the police and paramilitary forces at Agrasen Inter College in afternoon. Kulkarni asked for foolproof security with proper crowd regulation. The traffic diversions and restrictions were also imposed in and around the city from Sunday late evening.

Officials said that timing for shahi darshan of akharas of Naga sadhus has been fixed between 7am and 11am. KVT chief executive officer Vishal Singh said that the doors of temple’s sanctum sanctorum will be opened for devotees with the completion of Mangal aarti at 3.30am. The entry of pilgrims will not be allowed at the time of aarti. The entry of VIPs will be allowed only between 5pm and 7pm.

Over 40 temples, unearthed during the process of removal of buildings purchased for temple expansion projects, have also been cleaned and decorated for special rituals of the festive day, Singh added.

Apart from KVT, massive preparations for Mahashivratri were evident at other prominent Shiva temples including Kedareshwar, Markandeya Mahadev Kaithi, Mrityunjaya Mahadev, Tilbhandeshwar, Kriti Visheshwar, Jageshwars, Omkaleshwar, Sarangnath, Vishwanath temple of BHU, Rameshwar, Shool Tankeshwar and others. Officials reviewed the traditional Shiv Baraat and Panchkroshi Parikrama routes.
