A man is dead and two others have been wounded in a shooting at a Melbourne venue.

The shooting occurred at the Melbourne Pavilion in the inner-city suburb of Kensington, where a crowd had reportedly gathered to watch a boxing match.

Emergency services were called to the venue on Racecourse Road on reports a number of shots had been fired about 10pm on Friday.

Police found one man dead and two others with gunshot wounds. The area was put into lockdown, with roads blocked and trams stopped.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclerar to detectives on Friday night but police do not believe there is any further threat to the community.
