CCTV footage helps nab gang behind beauty parlour robbery

CHENNAI: Police on Thursday nabbed two of four men, who robbed a woman at knifepoint at a beauty parlour in Kolathur on February 25, after getting clues from the CCTV footage.
Police identified the accused as Karthik, 30, of Kannigapuram, in Pulianthope, and Abbas, 32, of Tiruvallure Cross street, in Thiru-vi-ka Nagar.
Savithri, 37, runs a beauty parlour at Ganesh Nagar. On February 25, four men barged into the parlour at 4.30pm brandishing knives.
They covered their faces to conceal their identity. They snatched her three-sovereign gold chain. and one-sovereign bracelet.
Though Veerakumar, a worker, tried to grab the attention of outsiders, it was in vain. His 3.5-sovereign gold chain and one-sovereign bracelet were robbed.
Terrorised, Jemila, another employee, tried to run away, but the gang caught her and snatched her three-sovereign gold chain. They also took away six cellphones, police said.
Savithri lodged a complaint at Kolathur police station. Police said that they analyzed the CCTV camera footage and found that the four men came on two bikes. Police passed the vehicle details to other police stations.
On receiving a tip-off about the vehicle, a special team intercepted two juveniles-on the bike-at Madhavaram.
The juveniles, when questionned, told police that a person called Karthik handed over the bike to them for a ride. Based on their statement, police nabbed Karthik and his accomplice Abbas from a hideout.
On questioning, the duo confessed to having committed the offence. Police said that the bike belonged to John, who also is a suspect in the robbery. Police have launched a hunt for John and his friend Umar.
Police said Karthik is a history-sheeter in Pulianthope. He was involved in ten cases - including murder attempts and robbery. He came out on bail in January. He had once been detained under the Goondas Act, police added.
Abbass is also an offender in Ice House police station limits.
"The women who go to beauty parlours are mostly well-offs, which helped them in looting expensive mobile phones and jewellery," said a police officer.
