AHMEDABAD: Sonal Rajput, a resident of Vejalpur, hanged herself at her matrimonial home in the Jivraj Park neighbourhood on Thursday evening.

She had gotten married just a month and a half ago. Vejalpur police sources said Sonal’s parents lodged a complaint against her husband, Ankit Rajput, his sister and mother, alleging that they abetted her suicide by torturing and harassing her for dowry. The FIR includes charges under the Prevention of Atrocities Act, as Sonal belonged to a scheduled caste, besides the those for domestic violence, and IPC section 498(a), for cruelty to a woman by her husband or his relatives. Sonal’s mother stated that about a month and a half month ago she told she had married Ankit Rajput.

“Sonal’s family then let her live with Ankit, at his flat at Parul Apartments in Jivraj Park. About 20 days ago, Sonal called her mother and said that she was being tortured by her husband, his sister and his mother, for money,” a senior Vejalpur police official said.

The FIR states that on Thursday at about 5pm, Sonal’s mother got a call from her husband, Mangubhai, informing her that Parul and her husband were fighting over something. “When Mangubhai and his son rushed to the apartment, they found her hanging by a dupatta from a fan in her bedroom. Ankit brought her body down and they rushed her to Jivraj Mehta Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival,” a police official said.
