The new McLaren 720S Spider takes everything that’s brilliant with the Coupe and adds the benefit of the open-air driving experience, according to the reviews.

McLaren claims that the transition from the 720S Coupe to Spider didn’t require any additional structural support, thanks to the carbon tub being already extremely strong and rigid. In addition, the new 720S Spider weighs just 49kg (108lbs) more than the Coupe, at 1,332kg (2,937lbs).

The retractable hard top consists of a single carbon fiber panel and can be raised or lowered in just 11 seconds and at speeds of up to 31 mph (50 km/h). Customers will be offered an optional electrochromic roof glass panel that can rapidly switch from transparent to tinted at the touch of a button.

As expected, engine specs are identical to the Coupe, with the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 producing 710hp (720PS) and 568lb-ft (769Nm) of torque and being mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

McLaren claims the 720S Spider’s acceleration is on par with the Coupe; 0-62mph (100km/h) comes in 2.9 seconds, 0-124mph (200km/h) in 7.9 seconds while the quarter mile is dealt with in 10.4 seconds. Flat out it’ll do 212mph (341km/h) with the top closed, and “just” 202mph (325km/h) with it open.

With the 720S Coupe already being one of the fastest and most capable supercars in the world right now, and McLaren claiming almost identical acceleration and handling traits for the Spider, it’s no wonder why Carwow and Carfection were so smitten with it.
