PANAJI: Stating that Goa is ranked very high for risk parameters of cancer, health secretary J Ashok Kumar said that the new tertiary cancer centre that will be set up at Goa Medical College (GMC) will be a boost for the state which has been falling behind in addressing cancer treatment.

The health secretary was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the tertiary cancer centre, and the day care centre at the Institute of Psychiatry & Human Behaviour (IPHB), at Dr Shyama Prasad stadium on Friday.

Kumar said that once the centre is established, which is being built with Rs 40 crore assistance from the Centre, it will help create more awareness about cancer among the public.

“With the new tertiary centre expected to come up within the next 12 to 18 months, GMC will tie up with specialists from Tata Memorial Hospital and patients will not have to travel to Mumbai,” health minister, Vishwajit Rane said.

Head of department of medical oncology, Dr Anupama Borker, said cancer is curable if detected early. “One can reduce the risk of cancer by reducing the intake of tobacco (including smokeless products), alcohol and junk food,” Borker said.

Obesity, exposure to UV radiation, physical inactivity and poor diet all increase the risk of cancer, she said. The hepatitis B vaccine also significantly reduces the chances of getting liver cancer. Physical activity, yoga and meditation and adopting a healthy lifestyle will help reduce the risk of cancer, Borker said.

Rane also launched 10 advanced life-saving 108 ambulances and said these would be stationed at Curtorim, Shiroda, Divar, Netravali, Honda, Mandrem and Curtorim and Sanguem.

The EMRI 108 will soon provide hearse vans and free drops in drop-back vehicles to mothers who have just delivered so that people don’t have to spend money on private services, he said.

Director of women and child development, Dipak Desai, told hundreds of anganwadi workers at the Bambolim stadium, that the Swawlamban scheme launched last month would provide financial assistance of Rs 30,000 (including Rs 10,000 for courses of their choice) to self-help groups (SHG).

He urged SHGs to register at the district registrar offices at Osia Complex, Margao and Junta House, Panaji adding that in many cases they found that many SHGs were not registered and in certain cases the registration was not renewed.
