Rationalist Jayant Pandya convicted in 1992 fraud case

Rajkot: Well-known rationalist Jayant Pandya on Saturday was sentenced to seven-year imprisonment for siphoning off students’ scholarship money of a Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC)-run school.
The judicial magistrate court here pronounced the sentence, slapped Pandya with Rs 17,000 fine and added two and a half months of imprisonment, if he failed to pay the fine.
According to the details of the case, Pandya had siphoned off students’ scholarship fund of the RMC-run school No. 10, of which he was the principal in 1992. The complaint of fraud in this connection was lodged with Pradyumannagar police station at that time.
Pandya had taken the help of co-accused Ganesh Sakhiya, who died later, to take the signatures of the students on bogus registers and siphoned off their scholarships money.
Pandya is the president of Vigyan Jatha, a non-governmental organization fighting superstitions and propagating rationalism.
