Mumbai: Double-decker bridge to be part of Sewri-Worli connector near Parel

MUMBAI: A double-decker bridge will come up at the Prabhadevi-Parel station stretch as part of the Sewri-Worli connector, which will link Mumbai Trans-harbour Link (MTHL) and Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The 4.30km connector will have 2+2 lanes and will cost almost Rs 900 crore.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) joint project director (public relations) said, "The ROB at Prabhadevi will have to demolished and a double-decker one will come up." The design is likely to be similar to the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR). in which the upper arm of the flyover connects Eastern Express Highway from Kurla, near LBS Road, and the lower arm gives access to Tilak Nagar and Nehru Nagar.
MMRDA had toyed with the idea of an underground stretch below the Prabhadevi-Parel tracks, as it felt that gaining design approvals from the railways for an elevated one would be time-consuming. But the underground plan seems unfeasible technically and could be costly.
The flyover will be built at height of 27m as it had to criss-cross above flyovers on Dr BA Ambedkar Road and Tulsi Pipe Road.
The distance between these two connections can be completed in 10 minutes, as against the present 40-60 minutes. Work on the corridor can be completed in four years, officials said.
In March 2013, MMRDA had invited bids to construct the east-west road connectivity. Five companies had shown interest by submitting quotations but MMRDA found that the bids were below the reserved price set by it. MMRDA then dropped the idea of building the connector as there was no progress on MTHL, without which this project would not have received desired traffic.
Work on MTHL got off to a start in April 2018 with the contractor conducting soil-testing in the creek to set up piers for the 16.5km route, of which 5.5km will be through land. The 22-km MTHL will provide direct access to Navi Mumbai and the new international airport, and be a convenient gateway to Mumbai-Pune Expressway and further to southern India.
MMRDA has allocated Rs 3,000 crore for the next financial year for MTHL.
