In a lucky strike, a team from city police found a 60-year-old man accused of murdering his son, who has been absconding for nearly two years after jumping bail, hiding among a group of beggars in front of a mosque in Mannadi on Thursday.
Chennai:
Fakruddin and his son, Dastaghir (23), stayed at a rented house on Dargah Street in Triplicane, with Fakruddin’s ailing mother. Dastaghir, who worked at a jewel box manufacturing firm in the city, used to consume liquor with his father during the night hours. Inquiries revealed that they often fought with each other over trivial issues.
On that night, after they drank liquor as usual, a quarrel erupted between them. As Fakruddin told the police later, he was angry at his son for not taking care of the family, including the grandmother, and wasting all the money on alcohol. In the midst of the verbal quarrel, Fakruddin stabbed his son. He ran away from the house immediately afterwards. The neighbours who came there hearing Dastaghir’s cries rushed him to Royapettah GH.
However, as his condition was serious, the doctors there referred him to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where he died without responding to treatment.
The Marina police registered a case under the IPC Section 302 (murder) and launched a hunt for the man. After absconding for nearly three months, he finally fell into the police net on July 15, 2017. Later in August, Fakruddin came out on bail. But he went absconding, after which a non-bailable warrant was issued against him.
A team from Marina police station, who had seen his photo among the list of absconding suspects, stumbled upon the man while he was seeking alms outside the dargah along with six other people. Despite his long beard and worn-out cloths, the police team grew suspicious, and questioned him to learn that he was a wanted man who had killed his son and jumped bail in August 2017. The man, Fakruddin, had stabbed his son to death on March 25, 2017, in Triplicane following a drunken brawl.
