Rajkot: The new and developing areas of Rajkot West that include Kalavad Road and 150-feet Ring Road will now get Narmada water.
The Rajkot irrigation department on Saturday successfully tested the water flow from Tramba village near Aji-I dam to Nyari-I dam on Saturday. The district administration has laid pipeline to carry Narmada water for drinking purpose from Aji-I dam to Nyari-I dam.
These areas have been receiving water stored in the Nyari-I dam during monsoon. The flow of Narmada water will ensure that the newly developing western parts of Rajkot get uninterrupted water supply throughout the summer.
According to official release by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), water had started flowing into the pipeline from Tramba village to Nyari-1 dam on Saturday.
RMC will provide 45 MLD (million litre per day) water to new areas of Rajkot West from Nyari-I dam. Rajkot’s current water requirement totals to 140 MLD.
This project, under the government’s flagship Saurashtra-Narmada Avataran Irrigation (SAUNI) Yojana, will be officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The Narmada water will be released near Rauki village and from there it will reach Nyari-I dam.
According to RMC, Nyari-I will get 7 MCFT (million cubic feet) Narmada water per day. It has height of 25-feet and current water level is 8.36 foot.
The dam has capacity of 1,248 MCFT and currently has 207 MCFT water which would last till May.
RMC commissioner Banccha Nidhi Pani told TOI, “Now, we can transport water from Aji-I to Nyari-I according to our requirement thereby providing uninterrupted water supply to all parts of the city.”
Out of its total water requirement of 140 MLD, RMC gets 100 MLD Narmada water.
