School limits applications to one community, apologizes
tnn | Mar 3, 2019, 04:36 ISTCoimbatore: Chief educational officer (CEO) P Ayyanan inspected a private minority school in the city on Saturday after copy of a notice by it stating applications would be distributed only to the Christian students went viral on social media.
Earlier, Nirmala Matha Convent Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Kuniamuthur had put up a notice that read “LKG applications will be distributed only to the Christian students on March 2 between 9.30 and 11.00 am”.
Someone took a photo of it and circulated it on social media, prompting many to voice against the discrimination. When the news reached school education minister KA Sengottaiyan, he directed the CEO to inspect the school.
After the inspection, the CEO said, “The school management said they made such an announcement only to manage the crowd seeking admission as it was public examination time. We will submit the report to the state government.”
Pointing out that he had scrutinized the past three years’ admission records of the school, Ayyanan said he hadn’t come across any irregularity.
School principal Sr Soona said their intension was not to avoid students belonging to other communities. The school management has tendered a written apology to the office of CEO.
Shortly after the inspection, the notice was removed and a new notice stating, “due to public examinations and administrative reasons, LKG applications for all the candidates will be issued on March 30” was put up.
