Girl, 15, dies after being thrown from car in horror Epping crash

A 15-year-old girl has died after being thrown from a car, which police suspect was stolen, in a horror early morning crash in Melbourne's north.

Police believe the 15-year-old girl was driving the Holden Astra when it crashed into a tree on Cooper Street in Epping shortly after 1am on Friday.

The girl was from Wollert, in Melbourne's north.

Her passenger, a 16-year-old girl from Keilor, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Detective Sergeant Jarrod Dwyer said tyre marks at the scene indicated speed could have been factor in the crash.

"We have significant tyre marks which indicate high speed prior to the vehicle losing control and mounting the centre media strip at which point it's rolled over, ejected one of the occupants who has later been declared deceased at the scene," he told radio station 3AW.

Police investigations are continuing.

Fifty-seven people have now been killed on Victoria roads so far this year, compared to 35 at the same time last year.

Anyone who saw the Astra prior to the crash or with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
