With a general alert being issued in the city over tensions on the Indo-Pakistan border, the Mumbai Police have enhanced security and Metro authorities have imposed a ‘red alert’ at its stations.
On Wednesday evening, Mumbai Metro tweeted from its official handle, “Basis the inputs received from security agencies, Mumbai Metro One has imposed Red Alert on all 12 stations with immediate effect. We seek cooperation and support from our esteemed commuters (sic).”
Officials said frisking and checking of baggage at all stations was being conducted more intensively and vigilance had been increased. On Thursday, Government Railway Police (GRP) Commissioner Niket Kaushik said, “Security measures have been stepped up and all necessary precautions are being taken at railway stations to ensure safety.”
The GRP has deployed teams at major stations to conduct flash checks on commuters and baggage. Special focus will be on stations where outstation trains halt. Lakhs of people pour into Mumbai through stations like the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, Kalyan Junction, Bandra Terminus and the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
Officers said additional personnel have been deployed at the entry and exit points of major stations to ensure better access control.
CCTV camera footage is being monitored round the clock. The GRP’s Local Crime Branch has assigned several personnel in plainclothes to gather intelligence. The presence of armed personnel to patrol stations has also been increased, sources said.
Heavy deployment of security personnel was seen across railway stations in the city. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) was seen in full strength at key stations such as CSMT, Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Thane, Kalyan, Borivali. “We have mobilised the maximum number of personnel along with dog squads and are conducting checks on people and parcels,” K.K. Ashraf, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Mumbai Division, Central Railway, said. The deployment is expected to continue on Friday as well.
