Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh urges Pakistan to admit to and release 1971 war POWs

CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh has urged Pakistan to admit to the 1971 Indo-Pak war Prisoners of War (PoWs) still in its captivity and release them at the earliest. He also urged the central government to take up this issue with the Islamabad.

Amarinder also extended a warm welcome to Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman on his return back home. During his tour of border areas in Gurdaspur tour on Friday, the chief minister expressed his happiness that talks to the construction of the Kartarpur corridor were on track despite the tension between the two neighbouring countries. He also urged the central government that 5,000 to 10,000 pilgrims should be allowed on daily basis to cross through once the corridor becomes operational.

Amarinder stated that the Punjab government was in constant contact with the central government on the issue of the compensation to be paid to those farmers in Dera Baba Nanak whose land was being acquired for the Kartarpur corridor. On his visit to the Haruwal village near to the international border in Gurdaspur district to instill confidence among the residents, the chief minister stated that he would be the first one to cross the border to pay his obeisance at the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara once the corridor would become operational.


Amarinder, himself a retired Army captain, assured the residents of border villages that there was no need for panic as the armed forces were fully prepared to deal with the situation and the state government was with them for their support. Recalling his visit to the border area as the ADC of General Harbaksh Singh back in 1965, Amarinder assured the people, “If anything happens, I’ll be there with you too.” Addressing the people in Dera Baba Nanak, Amarinder also said that his government was in constant touch with the central government and was well prepared to face any eventuality.


Amarinder also interacted with the BSF personnel over a cup of tea at the BSF border observation post in Dera Baba Nanak, besides interacting with the Army officers and soldiers at an army camp in the border district of Gurdaspur to boost their morale.


The chief minister was also briefed by DIG border range and Gurdaspur deputy commissioner about the steps taken for the safety of the residents on which he asked the civil and police administration to keep up the preparedness level.
