Howard's way

The Buffett family's philanthropic quests [February 16] are no doubt uplifting, yet depressing at the same time when you think that billions of dollars aren't enough to solve all of the world's problems. Carmen Fenech, Frenchs Forest, NSW

The high life

Australia's tallest man, Kewal Shiels [February 16], seems to be making a good fist of his physical attributes. But surely the constant questions and repeated alleged witticisms aimed at Kewal amount to "height speech". Brendan Vernon, Hawker, ACT

The art of subtraction

Just read Shelley Gare's story [February 16], which made me feel better as a similar thing recently happened to me. I particularly loved Shelley's line: "On the battlefield of life, good friends make our lives so much better." Name and address supplied

Foreign correspondence

I get really annoyed by the Americanisation of our language, and Amelia Lester's "Hugs and kisses" column [February 16] hit a raw nerve. Since when did we swap "exclamation mark" for the US equivalent, "exclamation point"? Y'all take care now. Denis Carey, Malvern East, Vic

We see men and women in government or business greeting each other often. Men are always greeted with a handshake and women with a kiss on the cheek, and often a hug. Why is this so? Women in business or politics should be treated with the respect of a handshake. Isn't this 2019? Maureen Goldie, Blackwood, SA

The quiz

The answer to question 18 [February 16] is not correct. The correct answer is Australian Rules football, which is played by others besides the elite-playing AFL. Kevin Johnson, Mornington, Vic

Social

T: @BENCARROLLMP Always admired @WarrenBuffett and now equally admire his son Howard ["Howard's way", February 16]. A lot I didn't know about the Buffett family, including that they opened their home to a young Sudanese refugee, supporting her until she completed uni. Family using privilege and fortune for good.

F: LIZ CUNNINGHAM The Buffetts sound like a very altruistic family. Would be wonderful if all rich people were as generous. I know many of them do give massive amounts of money to various charities and projects, but many don't.

F: RIKKI TIMMINS The world needs more people like the Buffetts. Great article.

T: @MARGOTSAVILLE Great story – enjoyed this read ["Under her eye", February 16].

F: ELI SUE This is a good read.

T: @SIMONWALINAUZ What a beautiful article. ["The high life", February 16]. I am 197cm and in a small way (no pun intended) this was an amplified experience of my own. I'm glad Kewal is so gracious and down to earth (sorry again). I'm certain the tall ones are the nicest. :)

T: @CALALLY Love love love [Dicey Topics, February 16] @courtneyact
