Thiruvananthapuram: The new regional transport office (enforcement) under the motor vehicles department will launch enforcement activities from Saturday.
In line with the announced motto of the wing to reduce the number of accidents in the state, the Thiruvananthapuram RTO enforcement wing has formed eight enforcement squads, comprising of one motor vehicle inspector and two assistant motor vehicle inspectors each.
These enforcement squads have been assigned specific routes – city based routes, coastal routes and suburban routes – for operations.
Major routes assigned to the squads are: Karakkamandapam-Balaramapuram-Parassala-Neyyattinkara route; Kazhakkoottam-Pothencode –Vattapara-Kesavadasapuram route; Peyad-Kattakada--Parassala route; Manacaud-Vizhinjam-Parassala route; Vazhuthacaud-Mangalapuram-Attingal route; Venjaramoodu-Nedumangad-Kachani route; and Attingal-Varkala-Chirayinkeezhu route are the major routes assigned to the squads.
According to Joshy K, regional transport officer (enforcement), the enforcement squads will conduct frequent checks and initiate steps to reduce traffic violations.
There will be another team of vehicle inspectors who will dedicatedly work to study about black spots on roads. Sites with more than five accident cases reported within one kilometre radius in the recent past will be identified. The team will study such spots and suggest specific solutions.
Frequent drives will be conducted to check traffic violations related to driving without wearing helmet, overload, using high beam lights, using mobilephones while driving and driving in inebriated condition. In addition to these violations, enforcement squads have been directed to check distractions such as fancy paintings and graphics on vehicles.
“Alterations to the features of the vehicle mentioned in the certificate of registration should be avoided. These graphics often distract motorists, which may lead to accidents. With regard to first instance of rule violation a check report is issued and the vehicle owner is asked to remove the alterations and to bring the vehicle for inspection within 15 days,” said Joshy.
