NEW DELHI: The turf war over the multi-million illegal liquor business of Bihar seems to be shifting towards Delhi. The name of a notorious criminal, Chunnu Thakur, has figured in gang war where a Bihar gangster, Amit Singh, was abducted, killed and his body set on fire allegedly by the former’s henchmen.

The incident took place 10 days ago. The crime branch has now arrested a key member of the Thakur gang who operated a hawala ring from east Delhi. The accused, Pankaj Kumar, has spilled the beans on how the deceased, Amit Singh, was eliminated for demanding a bigger market share in the distribution of illicit liquor in Bihar, a dry state.

Singh, who had over 20 cases of murder and kidnapping against him, had emerged as a big player in the illicit liquor business. His gang had been transporting liquor bottles from Delhi, UP and Haryana to Bihar by hiding them in goods consignments.

Things took an ugly turn when Thakur, who has over 150 cases of murder, extortion, robbery and dacoity against him, came to Delhi and got Singh killed, police said. Thakur is a known name in the Bihar underworld. He started his stint in crime with slain gangster Chhotan Shukla and later built his own gang. Last year, he had fled from custody in Muzaffarpur but surrendered later. He was currently out on bail.

According to DCP (crime branch) Rajesh Deo, Kumar belongs to east Champaran area in Bihar and was involved in Hawala business, along with his brother, Avneesh. They were operating from Gandhi Nagar market in east Delhi.

“The special investigation unit is now looking for Thakur and his associates,” Deo said. Several teams are conducting raids in Delhi, Faridabad and Bihar.

Delhi cops made the breakthrough when ACP Sandeep Lamba’s team received a tip-off from an informer that a suspect involved in a case of kidnapping and murder would come to Kashmere Gate on February 27. SI Vineet, ASI Ajay and others laid a trap around the monastery and Kumar was arrested after a chase. The cops also seized a car on Kumar’s instance, which was later found to have been used in Singh’s murder.

During interrogation, Kumar disclosed that Thakur had hatched the conspiracy to eliminate Singh for a bigger share in the liquor business in areas like Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur.

On February 20, Kumar and his associates, Ravi Master and Manu, had abducted Singh on the pretext of a meeting and took him to a flat on Delhi’s outskirts. The flat belonged to one Jitender Nagar, who, too, is absconding. “Singh was throttled after which Thakur instructed them to dispose of the body. The criminals drove to an isolated place near Mathura where they poured petrol over the body and set it ablaze,” DCP Deo said.
