Board exam evaluation hit by NRC update

GUWAHATI: Evaluation of Class X state board exam answer scripts has been hit by the ongoing process of updating the national register of citizens here.
Sources in the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (Seba) said due to shortage of evaluators triggered by the engagement of teachers from the government-run schools in NRC work, the board is facing an uphill task in completing the evaluation of about 22 lakh answer scripts by March 15.
“The announcement of the Lok Sabha election schedule is likely soon and the board is in a haste to complete the evaluation of over 3,00,000 students before EC ropes in government officials for election duty,” said a senior Seba official.
While a total of 18,000 teachers would be required for the completion of the entire evaluation process, district-wise engagement of a significant number of teachers in the NRC work may create hurdles in early completion.
Though checking of answer scripts started even before the conclusion of all papers for early results, Seba officials are expecting the district authorities to exempt the officials.
The All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) on Friday strongly objected to the Assam government’s decision to transfer 17 additional deputy commissioners entrusted with NRC works. As hearings for claims and objections regarding NRC update continued, Aasu president Dipanka Kumar Nath expressed surprise over the government move to shift key district officials at a time when the update process is in the final stage.
“The Supreme Court earlier asked the government not to engage the officials engaged in NRC work in other task. The apex court had also wanted to ensure that the election did not disrupt the engagement of NRC officials. Under such circumstances, the transfer of government officials on such a massive scale is objectionable,” said Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
