CHENNAI: In the wake of Indo-Pak tension, there will be no BJP rally during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kanyakumari on Friday. The decision was conveyed to the party’s state unit on Thursday morning, even as the Modi government mounted pressure on Pakistan to secure the safe release of wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman.

“There will be no party rally, only a government programme in Kanyakumari. But our cadres will participate,” BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan said.

The PM will inaugurate government schemes and address a gathering. The much-anticipated Tejas Express between Madurai and Chennai Egmore will be flagged off during the event.

Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, his deputy O Panneerselvam and Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan will participate in the function. “The PM will speak for about 30 minutes along with chief minister and deputy chief minister ,” said an official source. Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who was away on a private visit to Nagpur for two days, returned to Chennai on Thursday night.

The NDA allies are planning to showcase their togetherness with the BJP, the AIADMK and the PMK leaders expected to join the event at Vivekananda Polytechnic college ground in Agastheeswaram. “Our cadres will participate in huge numbers,” AIADMK organizing secretary and TN government’s representative N Thalavai Sundaraman said.

Pon Radhakrishnan, along with BJP national secretary Muralidhar Rao, and Thalavai Sundaram oversaw arrangements on Wednesday.

“Even in this emotionally surcharged atmosphere when the country is fighting terror, the PM is showing his commitment to the people of Tamil Nadu and launching programmes. It reflects his confidence in the security of the nation and its people,” BJP state general secretary Vanathi Srinivasan said.

The BJP camp was jubilant over Pakistan’s announcement of release of the wing commander, saying it was a diplomatic victory in the wake of the Modi government nurturing relationship with influential countries in the past five years.

The PM will unveil highway projects worth ₹2,995 crore. The 2/4 laning of Madurai-Ramanathapuram NH-49 will be dedicated to the nation and flyovers at Marthandam and Parvathipuram junctions inaugurated. Modi will lay foundation stones for four-laning of Madurai-Chettikulam section, four-laning of Chettikkulam to Natham section, restoration of rail connectivity between Rameswaram and Dhanuskodi, restoration of Pamban bridge (bridge across Pamban viaduct), a road safety park and a transport museum in Kanyakumari, the parliamentary constituency represented by the lone BJP MP, Radhakrishnan.
