CHENNAI: Defunct signals on two busy stretches of the Old Mahabalipuram Road have been giving motorists a tough time. Residents said the signals in front of Sathyabama College and near Perumal Temple have been on the blink ever since they were installed eight years ago.
"Signals in front of Sathyabama College and at the junction near Perumal Temple in Semmancheri are not working. The Perumal Koil junction has a U-turn. All vehicles coming from Semmancheri converge at this junction as there is no other way to reach the opposite side of the road," said G Satish, a resident.
"Pedestrians need a safe passage here," he said.
Satish said when the road was laid a decade ago, traffic was less and the defunct signals did not pose a big problem. But with heavy traffic and reckless driving, lack of a signal has become a major problem, he said.
"The signal outside Sathyabama College does not work. It needs to be replaced. They worked during the testing period eight years ago but not after that," said a resident of Semmancheri.
Residents said officials passed the buck whenever approached for a solution. Neither the city traffic police nor the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) had solved the issue.
A senior official with the traffic (South) wing said the issue had to be brought to the notice of TNRDC. "They maintain the road and the signals," he said.
When contacted, an official with the IT Expressway said, "Maintenance of signals is overseen by a separate wing." He did not specify when and how maintenance is carried out.
An official from TNRDC maintenance team said the control boxes for both the signals have to be procured. "The signal near Perumal Koil does not work as the traffic police had given orders that there should not be a U-turn at this point. Now they have asked us to open a U-turn at that point. The traffic signal near Sathyabama College is not functioning and has to be repaired. We have given orders for control boxes. They will be fixed in another 10 days," he said.
