DVAC has registered an FIR against sub-registrar Selvaraj, 55, a native of Malumichampatti and his office assistant Arumugam, 55 of Vadavalli, who was collecting money from document writers on his behalf.
According to sources, Selvaraj has been working as sub-registrar for the last 19 months. After they received information that he was receiving bribe with the help of his assistant and a grocery shop owner in the night, a team led by deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Rajesh conducted a surprise check at the office on Thursday night. “He was paying Arumugam Rs 2,500 per week. Arumugam used to collect bribe from document writers every day for land registration and keep the money inside Selvaraj’s lunch bag, which he would keep inside the official’s car. He would give the car key to Murugesan, a grocery shop owner, who was also acting as a bribe collection agent,” an official said.
When the DVAC team entered the sub-registrar’s office, Murugesan fled from the place. However, the sleuths opened the car using another key and recovered Rs 30,500 from the lunch bag and a list of people, who had given bribe. Arumugam had collected Rs 93,000 from three document writers and kept the amount in an envelope. The officials also seized Rs 2,950 unaccounted money from the office.
DVAC registered a case against Selvaraj and Arumugam under the prevention of corruption Act.
The details of the FIR will be sent to the registration department and they will take departmental action against Selvaraj, a DVAC official said.
