Mild rainfall leads to slight dip in day temperature

Some parts of the city on Thursday received surprise showers. Though weather stations in Chennai did not record significant rainfall, mild showers in the morning led to a slight dip in day temperature.

On Thursday, weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and 32.1 degrees Celsius respectively, which is close to normal for the period.

N. Puviarasan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai, said many parts of the city and its suburbs experienced mild showers in the morning hours due to a line of wind discontinuity or an abrupt change in wind direction.

“When the dry north-westerly winds meet the moist south-easterly winds along the coast, it influences rainfall,” he said.

Trough to bring rain

The city could experience the impact of the wind discontinuity till Friday . There may be a rise in temperature after two days.

A trough over Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining Comorin area may also bring rains particularly over south Tamil Nadu, he added.

The Meteorological Department has forecast the likelihood of light rains in some areas of the city.
