16-year-old boy’s organs give new lease of life to four persons

Meet Bharat Patel, a student of Swaminarayan Gurukul School of Bhilad in Valsad district, was going with his father Bharat Patel, an electrician, on a motorcycle when a truck rammed into their two-wheeler near State Bank of India in Bhilad on February 26. Seriously injured on head, the boy was rushed to Rainbow Hospital in Vapi and then shifted to Mahavir Trauma Hospital in Surat. He had a swelling on brain together with improper blood circulation. He was declared brain-dead on February 28 by doctors.
Meet’s father, mother Shilpa, sister Ayushi and brother Mann agreed to donate his organs when volunteers from Donate Life, a non-government organization, approached them. They said if his organs can help give someone a new life, they were willing to donate them.
A team of doctors from Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre, Ahmedabad harvested Meet’s organs. One of his kidneys was transplanted into the body of Ratan Waghela, 36, a resident of Ahmedabad, and another into Rajendrasinh Sayania, 66, a native of Bharuch. Recipients of Meet’s liver and pancreas were Alpesh Bhalani, 45, a resident of Ahmedabad, and Popat Odedara, 39, a resident of Mangrol, respectively.
