‘Security tourism’ in Officers’ Colony draws residents of surrounding localities

Officers’ Colony Residents Welfare Association in Mogappair is among the groups in the region that have brought their neighbourhoods under a digital cover. Not only that, they are showing residents of surrounding localities, which include Mannurpet, Pattaravakkam, Padi, Korattur, Ambattur Industrial Estate and Athipet, the way to bringing their areas under such a cover.

“Many residents from neighbouring areas have been visiting our area to see the working of the cameras in our neighbourhood. We also teach them some simple ways to maintain the surveillance system in their neighbourhood,” says V. Rajagopal, president, Anna Nagar Western Extension Phase II Residents Welfare Association.

Officers’ Colony has 23 high-end revolving cameras that cover all of its eight streets. Personnel from neighbouring police stations including Tirumangalam, Korattur, J.J. Nagar and Ambattur are known to visit Officers’ Colony to take footage recorded in these cameras to get clues into ongoing cases.

Many unsolved cases are said to have been cracked with the help of the surveillance system in the neighbourhood.
