Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal launches scheme to provide rice at 1/kg

GUWHATI: Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday launched the state government's flagship programme, Affordable and Nourishment Assistance (ANNA) Yojana, here. The programme will provide nearly 2.5 crore beneficiaries rice at Re 1 per kilogram from March 1 onwards to strengthen food security.
"The ANNA scheme aims to enable the underprivileged people to live a life of dignity with their heads held high. This scheme is an embodiment of this spirit of equal development." Sonowal said at the launch of the scheme implemented by the food and civil supplies department at the GMCH auditorium in the city.
"We have not launched schemes with narrow thinking for deriving political gains. Our government is committed to protect Assam's land, culture and language and no one should doubt our sincerity in this regard," Sonowal said.
Speaking on the occasion, finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said nearly 2.5 crore people from 57 lakh families will receive rice at the subsidised rate of Rs 1 per kg under the scheme. "People will be able to directly complain to our helpline number if anybody asks for more than Rs 1 from the beneficiaries," he said.
