Pirates out to keep up with the leading pack

2019-03-01 15:04

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates could move to the top of the table with a victory over Golden Arrows in their Absa Premiership match at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday.

Pirates go into the match in third place on the log, two points behind BidVest Wits - who play Cape Town City on the same day – and trail league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns – at home Bloemfontein Celtic earlier on Saturday by three points.

Arrows, meanwhile, are in 10th place on the table and firmly entrenched in mid-table and out of sight of the relegation zone and in with a chance of qualifying in the top eight.

The Buccaneers are coming off a commanding 4-1 victory over Amazulu last week, but coach Micho Sredojevic believes they are in for a tough test this weekend and refused to be drawn into any talk of them being title challengers.

“We are having a totally different approach, we don't want to speak about our respected opponents [title rivals] in order to plan towards them,” Sredojevic told the media.

"We have strict targets focused [on one game at a time] - we are thinking now about how, against a top coach and a top team Golden Arrows on Saturday, to match and outmatch them.

"It will be a tough match, but we don't want to come into a position that, though it was a good step in the right direction against AmaZulu where we have signed the document with a good result and scoring four goals, but that document needs a stamp."

After drawing 1-1 with Chippa United last week, Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela admitted that his side might need a slice of good fortune to finish the season on a high note.

"At this stage of the season, luck plays a huge role in results," Komphela said.

"Good thing, we are not fighting relegation, it won't be that hard for us to push for cup and league games, we can manage to drive both.

"We are not under pressure, so we need to be confident and remain optimistic. In life you must always see the light in the darkness."

The match kicks off at 20:15.
