This was a long-standing demand from the residents of two localities in Porur

A long-standing demand of the residents of Karampakkam Main Road and First Street in Porur have finally been met.

They have been seeking stormwater drains for a long time and the work on these were completed a month ago.

The drains are six feet deep and two feet wide. After completion of the work, the Greater Chennai Corporation re-laid these two stretches with cement and not bitumen topping.

Corporation officials say the stormwater drains were were severely affected during the floods in 2015. The project was funded by the Corporation. When the construction of the ₹54-crore flyover at Porur junction began, these two streets were converted into a one-way route to allow vehicles from Mount – Poonamallee Main Road to reach Arcot Road.

As a result, construction of drains for sewage, drinking water pipes and storm-water got delayed.

Now, stormwater drains have been built in most of the roads in the Porur connecting, including arterial roads like Arcot Road and Mount – Poonamallee Main Road. Stormwater drain work on the rest of the streets in Porur will be taken up in a phased manner.
