CHENNAI: The Tiruvallur district principal sessions court has awarded life sentence to 55-year-old Natarajan, a coolie, for murdering his wife, who ran a mobile-tiffin shop, on November 23, 2017 after she refused to give him money to buy liquor.

The PDJ justice Selvanathan found Natarajan guilty of murdering his wife Shanthi, 52, and pronounced his verdict on Wednesday. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000.

Police said Shanthi was preparing food for her mobile tiffin-shop customers, when Natarajan barged in and demanded money to buy liquor. Though she initially ignored him, he followed her and pleaded for money. Shanthi then abused him for his errant activities, following which, Natarajan turned violent and he stabbed her on stomach with a kitchen knife. She was immediately taken to the government hospital in Tiruvallur, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Based on a complaint by Shanthi’s son Satish Kumar, the Kadambathur police registered a case and arrested Natarajan and he was remanded in prison under the murder charges.
