When Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) was first introduced in X Men: Apocalypse, her immense powers and abilities went ignored as she was just portrayed as a telepathic and a telekinetic — a lesser version of Charles Xavier (James Mc Avoy). She was relegated to helping out in the background, while the others fought the actual battle.
Now, with Dark Phoenix, Jean is finally reaching her potential as a character. She is shown to be more powerful than all of the X-Men combined, especially now with the Phoenix Force that has bonded with her. The movie is a direct adaptation of the comic book storyline The Dark Phoenix Saga. While in the comics, Jean destroys an entire star, killing all the life on a planet, it is unclear if this has made it into the movie. Jessica Chastain plays the villain, an alien who mentors Jean through her transformation into Dark Phoenix.
Professor X and Magneto/Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) once again get together to save Jean and destroy Phoenix. Jennifer Lawrence revisits her role as Mystique. Evan Peters is in the film as Peter Maximoff — and the audience may get to see Erik finding out that Peter is his son. The cast includes Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler.
Simon Kinberg is helming a film for the first time, with a screenplay by him. The events of this movie are set nearly a decade after Apocalypse occurred. X Men: Dark Phoenix is slated for release in June 2019.
