KANPUR: The police have recorded statements of 12 people, including doctors, paramedical staff and coordinators of two Delhi hospitals - PSRI and Fortis - and gathered vital records to file a chargesheet in connection with the international kidney racket busted in the city on February 17.

A total of six people, including alleged mastermind T Raj Kumar Rao, have been arrested in the racket.

"We have recorded detailed statements of 12 persons, including doctors, paramedical staff and coordinators and gathered evidences against the accused and are hopeful of building a strong case against the accused (in the court). We will be scrutinising the documents submitted for all transplants at the PSRI and Fortis hospitals in the past, as well as call details of all the accused and file a charge-sheet in the kidney racket case in the court very soon," said SP South.

As investigation into the illegal kidney donation racket continues following the arrest of six persons from the city, police sources said the role of a few doctors, besides coordinators and para-medic staff from PSRI and Fortis hospitals, was also under the scanner. "There are a few doctors who we suspect to be involved, including those from PSRI and Fortis. Depending on the evidence, we will decide if they can be charged," said the officer.

To recall, the arrested accused include Shailesh Saxena, who had worked as personal secretaries to Apollo hospital doctors for three-four years.

Also, during investigations it has came to fore that the six persons arrested from Kanpur on February 17 used to coordinate with one Sunita at PSRI while Mithun at Fortis hospitals of Delhi.

The police had earlier told TOI that nearly eight more donors have contacted them and a few among them have even expressed the desire to become a witness in the case.

"One such donor is from Rae Bareli, who had identified Gaurav Mishra, one of the gang members who lured him and pocketed huge sum of money by doing his kidney transplant," said SP South Raveena Tyagi.

With the arrest of six persons, an inter-state kidney and liver racket was busted by city police on February 17. The master-mind of the racket in which poor people were lured and their kidneys were being illegally removed, belongs to Kolkata while his aides were operating from Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Meerut, Noida and New Delhi.
