Maha governor had opposed BJP meet a decade ago, silent now
Sarfaraz Ahmed | TNN | Mar 1, 2019, 04:59 ISTNagpur: The Maharasthra governor, as chancellor, had issued two notices to former VC SN Pathan and NU management council members for their decision to allot varsity land for BJP national convention without seeking his permission near Subedar Hall on Amravati Road on February 9, 2009.
A decade later, the NU VC SP Kane has permitted a BJP-RSS sponsored event at Guru Nanak Bhavan without the management council approval. However, since BJP is in power and the governor himself as confessed to his RSS background, the highest office too has refused to intervene in the event organized by Vidyapeeth Shikshan Manch scheduled for March 2.
NU officials claimed that the meet would only project union minister's Nitin Gadkari candidature for re-election from city's LS constituency. The topic chosen would also give the BJP heavyweight highlight his government's work on smart city projects like Metro, cement roads etc rather than talk on public administration or academics.
The officials said most of the NU officials and teachers too were unhappy with the VC’s decision of letting out the facility to Shikshan Manch.
TOI had mailed a detailed questionnaire on the controversy to Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, secretary to governor BVG Reddy, principal secretary of higher education Saurabh Vijay and director of higher education Dhanraj Mane. None of them have replied on what action the governor’s office and education department would initiate against NU for encouraging a political activity against norms.
In 2009, the former VC had courted controversy after he was forced to rent out the university land for the BJP meet. The issue had snowballed into a major confrontation with academicians standing behind Pathan while the governor SC Jamir insisting on his termination. Finally, the management council convinced the chancellor who decided to recall the notices.
Meanwhile, the conference has received tremendous response as well as opposition. On Thursday, the registration had crossed 600 even as several students bodies joined hands to disrupt the conference calling it political rally.
“The governor should rise to the occasion beyond petty political considerations and uphold the law which really stands in his name. The VC is doing saffronization of the university keeping ruling party in good humour for his future game. How can he share dais with a tainted person accused of bribery. This is moral degradation of the VC for petty gains,” said Nationalist Youth Congress city president Shailendra Tiwari who is leading the students.
