The National Highways wing of the State Highways Department will take up widening of Sulur Road for eight km from Sulur to Pappampatti Pirivu.
An official of the Highways Department said the project will be taken up at a cost of ₹17 crore and about 500 trees will be cut.
The project does not involve land acquisition and the works will start when the trees are cut.
It also has plans to widen the road at Perianaikenpalayam and nearly 1,000 trees will be cut on this stretch.
The work has been awarded to a contractor. However, it is yet to take off as the trees on the roadsides are yet to be removed.
The official said efforts are also on to plant 10 saplings for every tree cut for these projects.
“We do not have the know how to grow the trees. The Forest Department or any other agency can give us the estimates and we will deposit the amount with them for the saplings and maintenance,” the official said.
The main problem in planting the saplings is identifying the required land, the official added.
The identified land should be suitable for raising the saplings and there should be facilities to maintain them.
“However, we have initiated measures,” the official added.
