A GP who features in a new S4C series, Helo Syrjeri, hopes to inspire young people to work in the health sector in Wales.

Dr Rachel Davies, originally from Prestatyn but who now lives in Llan Ffestiniog, is a GP at Canolfan Goffa Ffestiniog. She worked as an inner-city GP in Nottingham, before returning to Wales three years ago to work in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

"I feel it’s important for me to return to Wales to work, and to give something back to a Welsh community like Blaenau," said Dr Rachel.

The new fly-on-the-wall series, Helo Syrjeri, gives the viewer a glimpse of the busy everyday lives of the GPs, the staff and patients, and what brings them together in the tight-knit community of Blaenau Ffestiniog and the surrounding area.

Over a course of a year, cameras have been recording the busy everyday life of Canolfan Goffa Ffestiniog. From the daily challenges facing the healthcare staff, to all the issues, big and small, that bring people to the centre.

"I can’t bare getting my photograph taken. Every time I see a camera, I run. But now I’ll be on TV!" said Dr Rachel.

"But the reason I’m doing this is because I want to inspire young people to work in the health services here in Wales. I’d never go in front of the camera for any other reason."

In the third episode of the series, broadcast on Monday, March 4, we’ll catch a glimpse of the centre from a work experience point of view, as a sixth form student from Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy, Llanrwst, joins the surgery for a week of experience.

‘Ifan Profiad Gwaith’ (‘Ifan Work Experience’) as he’s named in the programme, hopes to study medicine at university - a hope shared with Dr Rachel, who is eager to see more of Wales’ young people working in the health sector in Wales.

"We as doctors are getting older, and there aren’t many young doctors breaking through. If we can get young people who speak Welsh into medicine, and to come back to rural Wales to work, that would be amazing. Yes, the work is hard, but it’s fantastic at the same time. Working in the community is very important to me."

"By making this programme, I hope to inspire young people to work in the health sector," added Dr Rachel, "and if I can inspire just one person, then making this programme will have been worth every second."
