‘Fans, grinders from AIADMK govt. end up with scrap dealers’

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) treasurer and Katpadi MLA, Durai Murugan took a ‘dig’ at the ruling party’s habit of handing out freebies. He was attending a couple of ‘Gram Sabha’ meetings at Vaniyambadi on Thursday.

While talking at the Narasingapuram village under the Alangayam Panchayat Union, Mr. Durai Murugan said that if the DMK was voted to power in the State, all loans obtained by Self Help Groups would be waived. He mentioned that TV sets issued by the DMK government were still working whereas freebies such as fans, mixies and grinders given by AIADMK government were already being sent to the scrap dealers.

He also took part in a meeting held at Kotha Kottai village in Vaniyambadi. The DMK kickstarted its ‘Go to the Villages’ campaign in an attempt to take the Lok Sabha election campaign to the grassroots, with party president M.K. Stalin attending a ‘grama sabha’ meeting at Tiruvarur on January 3.

Party functionaries held similar meetings in all 12,617 village panchayats across the State.

Though the party calls them ‘grama sabha’ meetings, they are aimed at directly reaching out to voters and explaining the failures of the governments to them.

“Our aim is to meet people door-to-door and highlight the failures of the Centre and State governments. After a long time, the party has drawn out a campaign involving its grassroots functionaries and district-level office bearers to jointly reach out to the people at the panchayat level,” a party functionary added.
