MOHALI: After looking at the data provided by Mohali police department, a TOI team has assessed that the district police need to up the ante when it comes to solving criminal cases. If figures are to be believed, the cops have failed to track most of the miscreants involved in day to day criminal activities like theft, loot and snatchings.
Data given by the Mohali police department show that cops had failed to solve 73% cases, including snatching, registered in the district in 2018. In 2017, the percentage of unsolved cases was 71%.
In 2018, of 458 cases of theft, only 125 could be solved. Similarly, in 2017, out of 376 thefts, cops could solve only 111 cases.
In 2018, Mohali had registered 159 cases of burglary. The registered rate of cases related to burglary was lesser in 2017 at 107. Apparently, as many as 129 cases of 2018 and 83 cases of 2017 remain a mystery for our department.
Sources in the department said that around 39% cases registered under the Indian Penal Code in 2018 are yet to be cracked. “Of 2,509 cases registered under IPC in 2018, only 1,552 could be traced. In 2017, of 2,141 cases registered under the IPC, only 1,478 stand solved,” sources said.
Meanwhile, out of 31 cases of murder registered in the district in 2018, only 24 were successfully solved. In 2017, of 20 case of murder, only 13 cases were solved.
What is more interesting is the fact that at a time when the Mohali police failed to touch 50%-mark (in solving crimes) in rest of the cases, they have done exceptionally well in cracking cases of rape and cheating.
Of 51 cases of rape registered in 2018, cops were able to trace 50. In 2017, the cops were able to trace all 45 cases of rape.
Out of 430 cases of cheating registered in the district in 2018, police were able to track 415. Similarly, of 388 cases of cheating in 2017, as many as 384 were successfully traced.
