FALL RIVER — Bishop Connolly started quickly and never looked back in defeating West Bridgewater for the third time this season, winning 70-37 in Division 4 South Sectional boys' basketball tournament action Wednesday.

The fourth-seeded Cougars will host fifth-seeded Nantucket on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Nantucket defeated Sturgis East 72-30 on Wednesday.

Bishop Connolly capitalized on poor West Bridgewater shooting in the opening quarter and grabbed a 13-3 lead after the first eight minutes. The Wildcats misfired on all 13 shots from the floor in the quarter.

After the Wildcats got within three at 16-13, the Cougars went on an 11-0 run to build a 27-13 lead with 3:51 left in the half.

Bishop Connolly committed just three turnovers in that first half which ended with Bishop Connolly on top 38-21.

"Our defense has been really good all year, and if our offense can catch up with that, we'll be hard to beat," said Bishop Connolly coach Bill Shea. "We shot the ball much better today and we took care of the ball."

Bishop Connolly's leading scorer Cooper Creek opened the second half with the second of his four 3-pointers. He finished with a game-high 27 points.

"He's really picked it up offensively this year," Shea said of Creek. "He's really worked on his offensive game. We're hoping to find a good balance of inside and outside with him. He got off to a slow start tonight, but as you saw he will knock down those open shots."

The Cougars held a 54-32 lead after three, and Creek began the fourth quarter with nine straight points to build the lead to 31.

John Rego added 17 points for the winners.

CJ Ryan led West Bridgewater with nine.
