GHAZIABAD: A man allegedly shot at his wife after she refused to return to his house in Ghaziabad, police said on Tuesday. He was reportedly drunk when he shot his wife.

The victim, Razia, is said to be critical. According to the police, the 32-year-old accused, Asif, has been jailed a few times in cases of robbery and loot, they said, adding that he is a well-known criminal in Ghaziabad and Delhi. Asif was accompanied by two friends at the time of the crime, one of them is a sub-inspector in Delhi, police said.

"Asif went to his wife's maternal home with his two friends - Pawan Malik, a sub-inspector from Delhi, and his accomplice Jahid," they said. Asif reached her house in Garima Garden on Monday at 11.40pm, Razia's mother said.

The trio was trying to convince Razia to return to Asif's house when she put forward the condition that he would have to quit drinking. "At this, Asif shot his wife in the chest. Then he fired two more shots at the door and fled," Razia's mother said.

Following this, they rushed Razia to GTB hospital and then informed the police. Sahibabad police station SHO Jitender Kumar Singh said, "Why would Malik, a SI, accompany a criminal? Asif has over six cases registered against him in Delhi and Ghaziabad," he added. He added that they are trying to find out how the accused got the pistol. "We are probing if the weapon is licensed," he added. On the complaint of Razia's family, the police loged an FIR against Asif, Pawan and Zahid under the IPC Section of 307 (attempt to murder), the SHO added.
